Samsung Mondi tablet with high-speed Internet connection
We have witnessed a rapid rise of netbook PCs during the last year or so. Typically, the small laptops come with screen sizes between 6 and 11 inches. 8.9 and 10 inches are the most popular sizes. On the other hand, smartphones, like the Apple iPhone or the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic are increasingly getting larger displays. Still, between the smartphone and the netbook, there is room for a new product category. Some call them Internet tablets, others believe they are MID computers, while someone else claims they should be called UMPC PCs. In any case, Samsung has decided to introduce a pretty exciting product, the Mondi, to this new category.
The Samsung Mondi has both a touch screen display and qwerty keyboard. The display is 4.3 inches in size. So, it is not a smartphone, but a tablet. It can be connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi or the new Wimax 4G (fourth generation wireless broadband) technology. In early 2009, Wimax was available only in small areas in the US and Asia.
The Mondi is built on Windows Mobile 6.1 software which means it comes with Microsoft applications for email and multimedia. Fortunately, Samsung has chosen Opera for the Web browser. The tablet has built-in GPS with maps. It comes with 4GB of RAM, Bluetooth, 3 megapixel camera, and HDMI TV out connector.
The Samsung Mondi doesn't have many competitive products yet, but the one we have tried out is a tough product to beat. The Nokia N810 has a slide-out keyboard and touch screen. It runs on Linux. An active developer community has been developing open source applications for the product for a couple of years already
